In 2009 I started working with some kids at the local high school here in Cathcart, fixing computers and teaching them to work on the Cathcart High School website - www.cathcarthigh.co.za. We called this newly formed computer club The Geek League, and in our first year we managed to raise enough funds to upgrade the computer lab at the school, paint the walls and redo the cabling etc.

What’s with the Tux Penguin?

big-tuxSince the early years already Tux, the penguin, has been associated with OpenSource applications and Operating Systems. This little guy has been places, seen things and managed to become the face of OpenSource in most things online.

It’s because of this that we have now ‘adopted’ Tux on the Geek League website, and also in other places such as Desktop wallpapers and more.  Everything used by the Geek League is essentially OpenSource applications, such as the Joomla websites we are building and maintaining, as well as the ActionBox managing our networks.

Managing a school's website

Most of the times it helps to try and visualise things, and in the picture below ... well you'll find things visualised!

This is how the Geek League's work flows through to the school's website, and what needs to be done in order to achieve the end results.

What might that be?

Well, ensuring constant content to attract frequent visitors and high traffic volumes, in order to sustain advertisers on the website, which in turn creates an income from the website. OK, think about this ....
